Work Permits
For the protections of minors, the state of California requires Work Permits for student workers under the age of eighteen (18). A Work Permit is the contract all parties sign agreeing to observe labor laws, as well as the employer's certification that the student is covered by Worker's Compensation insurance.
Parents are encouraged to also check the work site for safe working conditions, communicate often with your child about the working conditions, and meet the business owner or manager and let them know your awareness of labor laws. Students learn valuable life skills when they enter the world of work, but too many hours can jeopardize their health, their education, and their relationships with friends and family. We suggest no more than a twenty-hour work week during the school year.
Foothill Technology High School, at the request of the District Attorney's office, can cancel a Work Permit if the student fails to meet Ventura USD's expected 90% attendance requirement. Students must also maintain a 2.0 grade point average and have no F's in core subjects.
